Bob & Sarah Hazen

Algebra for Kids, LLC and SAI are owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Bob and Sarah Hazen. We began SAI in 1995 after having had several years of success in teaching substantive algebra to early elementary children. We believed there was a growing interest on the part of parents to broaden, connect, deepen, and elevate elementary mathematics for their children. We wanted to provide a way of tying K-6 arithmetic together with algebra so as to set children up for academic success in junior high school. SAI does just that! – and we have some 2,400 students (and their parents) who agree!
Besides his role as Director and Lead Teacher for SAI, Bob has taught secondary mathematics since 1988, in the public school systems of St. Paul, MN, and now at Mounds View High School in Arden Hills, MN. He has served on adjunct faculty at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, teaching elementary mathematics methods to future elementary teachers. He also was the director of the Chelsea Project, a year-long pilot program in which algebra, music, and manipulatives were used to teach math to regular first grade students in a traditional school setting. As a former columnist for a national education periodical, Bob has written extensively about elevating and connecting elementary mathematics.
Sarah Hazen is the SAI Registrar. As a former home-schooling mother, she has been active in the home-school movement for over ten years and has served on the board of directors for a regional educational resource center.
